Since antiquity, marble has been admired for the finesse it allows and for its ability to express strength and subtlety at once. From the ancient Greeks and Romans to the masters of the Renaissance and the sculptors of today, it has remained a valued and durable material for artistic expression. A marble sculpture is more than an ornament: it gives an idea tangible form, fixes a story in stone and stirs an emotion in the viewer.

Great names in marble sculpture

Over the centuries many artists have left their mark on marble carving. Among the best-known names are Michelangelo Buonarroti, to whom we owe the 'David' and the 'Pietà'; Gian Lorenzo Bernini, the Baroque sculptor who caught movement and emotion in stone; and Auguste Rodin, who worked in marble as well as bronze.

The process begins with the choice of good marble; the form is then drawn out of the stone step by step, each stroke of the chisel bringing it closer to its final state. Marble sculptures need little maintenance, although a minimum of care keeps their beauty and lustre. Regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth is usually enough. For deeper cleaning, use a mild, pH-neutral product and dry the sculpture thoroughly afterwards.

Avoid harsh chemicals and abrasive materials: they can etch or scratch the marble.

How is a marble sculpture made?

Each marble sculpture is carved by hand from the block with point, chisel and mallet, then refined with the rasp and polished with abrasive stone. That handwork, together with the veining of each block, means no two pieces are the same.

Are your marble sculptures antique originals or new creations?

All our marble sculptures are new and carved by hand, and none is an antique. Most follow historical examples – Greek and Roman antiquity, the taste of the Grand Tour. The works of David Liang are the exception: signed contemporary originals.

Are the David Liang works originals?

Yes. The marble works of David Liang (b. 1976) are signed contemporary originals – a deliberate exception in a collection otherwise made up of pieces in historical styles.

What is the difference between a marble bust and a torso?

A bust shows the head and upper body, often a portrait or a god; a torso shows the body without head or limbs, like the fragments that survive from antiquity. Both are carved by hand in marble.

What is a sculpture in the Grand Tour style?

The Grand Tour style takes up the souvenirs that 18th- and 19th-century travellers brought back from Italy, such as marble busts, scale models of temples and obelisks. Our pieces carry on that spirit as new works.

Which types of marble do you use?

Our pieces are carved in white marble, black marble, travertine or Rosso Levanto. Colour and veining vary from piece to piece, because marble is a natural stone.

How do I care for a marble sculpture?

Dust it dry and clean it with lukewarm water, without acids or abrasives. Treat stains quickly, as marble is porous. That way the marble keeps its lustre and clarity.

Is a marble sculpture suitable for the garden?

Marble is sensitive to frost and acid rain, so it is best suited to interiors or a sheltered spot outdoors. For lasting outdoor use, bronze or one of our garden sculptures is the better choice.

Can I buy a marble sculpture as a private client?

Yes. Since 2026 we also sell directly to private clients through our online shop, with a 14-day right of withdrawal. Trade clients order through their own account.

Where can I see the marble sculptures in person?

At our gallery at Hekelveld 1-1 in Amsterdam, by appointment. The full collection can always be viewed online.

How is a heavy marble sculpture delivered?

Each piece is carefully packed and sent by insured art transport throughout Europe; consignments over 30 kg travel on a pallet. Weight and dimensions are listed on the product page.
