Time Machine by David Liang - Black Marble

Signed at the base and numbered 2/6, Time Machine in black veined marble is a contemporary sculpture by David Liang (b. 1976). The deep anthracite stone is polished smooth, and fine white veins cross its surface.

Against the dark ground, the form reads more graphically than in the lighter versions. A large window opens in the upper loop, a smaller opening sits low down, and a funnel-shaped hollow on one flank goes right through the stone, letting a point of daylight pass. The sculpture rests on a rounded foot of the same veined marble, where the signature is cut.

Liang's subject is the wormhole – in physics, a theoretical tunnel through space-time that joins remote points of the universe by folding time and space. Each opening becomes a passage between past, present and future.

This original work by a living artist, carved entirely by hand, suits modern and classical interiors alike; set on a console table against a pale wall, its dark silhouette and white veining read clearly across the room.
