Our Story

A family-rooted passion for art

Our passion for art and design is rooted in our family history. With an academic background in museum studies, art history and the art market, each design begins with art-historical research. We believe that the spaces we live in should inspire us just as much as an exhibition.

Founder & artistic director

Lilly-Ann de Zeeuw (1999) is a Dutch artist, art historian, curator and the founder of Kuzco Art Maison. With an academic background in Museum Studies and Art, Market & Connoisseurship (University of Amsterdam & Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam), she develops sculptural objects that connect craftsmanship, heritage and contemporary symbolism. In 2025, she created a solid-gold sculpture commissioned by Gold Republic.

“My sculptures begin with art-historical research. I work in dialogue with the artists who came before us, and honour their legacy by bringing their visual language and symbolism back to life. I work exclusively with sustainable techniques and noble materials such as bronze, marble and gold — because art should be made for generations. My ambition is for my work to invite people to look again, and to embrace our shared art history with renewed appreciation.”

Behind the brand

Symbolism of Kuzco

Kuzco Art Maison takes its name from Kuzco, an Egyptian cat. This choice is not arbitrary, but imbued with symbolism and meaning. In ancient Egyptian culture, cats were revered and associated with powerful female figures such as Cleopatra, who was known for her intelligence, beauty and strategic insight.

In Egyptian culture, cats were revered and protected, often associated with deities such as Bastet, the goddess of home and hearth, who was depicted as a woman with the head of a cat. Cleopatra herself, the powerful and charismatic queen of Egypt, held cats in high regard, reinforcing their status as symbols of feminine power and grace.

In European folklore, cats were seen as companions of witches, women who were often persecuted in their time for their independence and knowledge. This association has turned the cat into a symbol of the unjust struggles that women have endured. This historical connection between cats and women inspired us to create a business that uses the cat as a symbol.
