The Large Time Machine in white marble is the 80 cm version of the wormhole sculpture by David Liang (b. 1976), a loop carved by hand, 46 cm long and 22 cm deep, scaled for a pedestal rather than a shelf. Grey-green bands and occasional black streaks move through the polished stone.

At this size the openings gain presence. A wide arch fills the upper loop and a round opening pierces the lower part, framing whatever lies behind; the curves lead the eye through the marble as if from one world into another. Behind it lies the wormhole of theoretical physics, a tunnel through space-time that pulls two remote points of the universe close by bending the fabric between them.

Liang works every piece by hand, combining knowledge of art history with technical skill, and signs his work. The loop sits on a round, slightly domed foot of the same marble. It is an original sculpture by a living artist, from a limited edition of six.

A smaller white version stands 60 cm high. The large one needs floor space of its own, on a pedestal in a living room where it can be walked around and its veining seen from every side.
