The Golden Throne of Tutankhamun

This Tutankhamun throne is a hand-carved replica of the gilded chair from the pharaoh's tomb, finished all over in gold leaf with red and dark painted accents. On the backrest the king sits while his queen, Ankhesenamun, stands before him beneath a sun disc with long descending rays.

Two lion heads sit at the front of the arms, and each arm side is formed by a winged cobra wearing a tall crown, its wings spread downwards. Feline legs end in paw feet, joined by square stretchers with turned balusters beneath the seat, and a band of hieroglyphs runs along the gently curved backrest. The seat carries a red cushion.

Howard Carter's team found the stairway to the tomb on 4 November 1922; the throne, his object no. 91, lay wrapped in linen in the Antechamber. The original – wood covered with sheets of gold, inlaid with glass, faience and semi-precious stones – shows Ankhesenamun anointing the king under the rays of the Aten and is now in the Grand Egyptian Museum.

Each new throne is hand-carved, then covered in gold leaf that leaves the backrest relief crisp. At 100 cm high with a 57 cm seat, it can stand against the main wall of an entrance hall and still be used, its winged cobras framing the sitter.
