These Roman medallions are a pair of oval wall reliefs, hand-carved from white marble with light grey veining and a few ochre threads. Each shows a laureate male profile, and the carved inscriptions settle who is who: DIVI·IVLI for the deified Julius Caesar, DIVVS·AVGVST for the emperor Augustus.

Within a moulded raised rim, the two heads turn towards each other – Caesar to the right, Augustus to the left – each crowned with a laurel wreath tied by a ribbon at the nape. Every plaque measures 44.5 cm high and 35 cm wide.

Roman rulers were portrayed in strict profile rather than full face, on coins as on state reliefs, and the laurel at the temples stood for victory and authority. Both medallions are new pieces, carved by hand, and the relief is kept shallow so that the profile reads through its outline and the fall of light across the brow and cheek.

Hung either side of the doorway into a study, the pair works as a frame for the opening, with Caesar on the left and Augustus on the right so that both laureate heads look inwards towards the door.
