This marble torso of a Roman general is carved in white marble, in the cuirassed statue type used for emperors and commanders in antiquity. The breastplate is richly worked with mythological motifs, hand-carved by our sculptors, while the paludamentum, the ceremonial military cloak worn over the shoulder, adds to the historical character of the piece.

The relief detail runs across the cuirass and the pteruges, the protective lappets at the waist, each picked out with masks and ornament. Subtle differences of texture in the marble create a play of light and shadow over the heroic forms.

It is carved entirely by hand in the long classical tradition, and reads as a strong architectural presence in a hallway, gallery or study, set on a plinth.
