Roman Marble Bath - Grand Tour Sculpture

This miniature Roman marble bath is carved in cream-coloured marble with a soft, warm clouding and stands on four lion-paw feet. A lion mask in relief sits at the centre of each long side, and a ring handle is cut at either end below the rolled rim.

The little tub rests on a separate rectangular plinth of white marble veined in grey-green, which lifts it and frames the paws. The whole piece is newly carved by hand, from the curve of the rim to the claws, and measures 19 cm long.

Its model is the Roman labrum, the large stone basin of ancient bathing culture, and the marble tubs of Imperial Rome: a second-century bath in the Louvre, once in the Borghese collection, is decorated with two lion heads holding rings. The miniature follows the tradition of the polished marbles that eighteenth- and nineteenth-century visitors to Italy took home as souvenirs.

On a dressing table it serves as a dish for rings and cufflinks, or it can stand among books on a shelf. Against dark wood, the cream tub and its veined plinth read clearly at close range.
