Versailles Garden Urns in White Marble - Pair

This pair of white marble garden urns is carved by hand after the form of the Medici vase, the antique bell-shaped krater with a figured relief. Beneath a broad, flared rim edged with rounded beads, a frieze of draped classical figures runs round the upper body.

Large satyr masks with curling ram's horns, crowned with vine leaves and bunches of grapes, stand at the handles, and acanthus leaves wrap the lower body above a square pedestal. Each new urn is cut entirely by hand and stands 180 cm high, and the white stone gives the relief crisp shadows in daylight.

The Medici vase itself, a Roman work of the late first century BC in Pentelic marble, is in the Uffizi in Florence. For the gardens of Versailles, Jean Cornu carved a white marble vase copied after the antique in 1683, which still stands on the Parterre de Latone; these urns belong to that French classical tradition without copying either vase or its frieze.

As a pair they flank a flight of garden steps or the way into a terrace, planted with clipped box or left empty. Against dark yew hedging, the white marble holds its outline from the far end of the garden.
