Borghese Centaurs – White Marble Set

These Borghese Centaurs are hand-carved in white marble as a mirrored pair. Both show the same old, bearded centaur, half man and half horse, with his arms bound behind his back, his torso twisted and his face drawn in torment – the ancient image of a soul tormented by love.

The model is the celebrated Centaure Borghèse in the Louvre, a Roman marble of the second century AD made after Hellenistic models. Found in Rome in the seventeenth century, it belonged to the Borghese collection and was acquired for France in 1807. Related are the so-called Furietti centaurs from Hadrian's Villa.

Each centaur rests a raised foreleg on a small block, with a scaled tree-trunk support beneath the horse body and a rectangular base of veined marble. The pair is also made in travertine.

Set at either end of a sideboard, the two centaurs turn towards each other and read as one composition, bringing classical antiquity into a present-day interior.
