This handsome pair of marble Borghese Centaurs is finely made, hand-carved in white marble. The centaurs, mythical creatures that are half man and half horse, are shown here as old, bearded figures with anguished faces and their arms bound behind their backs.

The pair follows the celebrated antique Roman marbles linked to the Borghese collection. The originals were carved in the late first or early second century AD after Hellenistic models, and were meant to remind the Roman viewer of the soul tormented by love, a theme underlined by the Eros riding one of the figures in the version now in the Louvre.

Like the related so-called Furietti Centaurs, the Borghese centaur, found in Rome in the seventeenth century, is regarded as a masterpiece of ancient sculpture. It was bought from the Borghese collection by Napoleon in 1807 and travelled to Paris, and later to the Louvre. As a set, these pieces make a strong classical statement on a console, mantel or library shelf.
