A short history of the gold mirror: from ancient Egypt to Versailles
The history of the mirror begins long before glass. In ancient Egypt hand mirrors were discs of polished metal; the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York holds several in copper alloy from the New Kingdom, one of them with a handle in the form of a young girl. In seventeenth-century France the large gilt-framed mirror became a sign of prestige, and the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles marks its high point. The palace itself notes that mirrors were then a costly rarity and that the gallery showed French manufacture could rival Venice. Each mirror is made by hand, with attention to every moulding. On most models the frame is built in wood, often with ornament in composite plaster, and gilded by hand with gold leaf, which gives a warm, deep sheen. The glass is of good quality and often bevelled, giving a clear reflection; the sunburst mirrors and the Cécile series have convex glass. The result is a mirror that is both decorative and solidly built.
