These white marble carved elephant statues carry stately obelisks of yellow carved marble on their backs. The Grand Tour Style pair carries a deeper symbolism that goes back to both Egyptian and Roman culture. The elephant as a symbol stands for intellectual strength and stability according to Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680).

These old concepts are subtly interwoven in these images. The gold leaf saddles add a touch of luxury.

This pair of white marble elephant sculptures carries tall obelisks in carved woodstone marble, in the Grand Tour tradition that drew European travellers to the antiquities of Egypt and Rome. The obelisk-on-elephant motif goes back to Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680), for whom the elephant stood for intellectual strength and stability.

Each elephant is hand-carved in white marble and stands on a stepped woodstone base, with the obelisk rising from a beaded collar on its back. The saddles are finished in gold leaf, a restrained note of luxury against the pale stone and warm grain of the woodstone.

As a matched pair, the sculptures work well flanking a mantelpiece, console or bookshelf in a classical or collector's interior. A considered piece for anyone drawn to symbolism and the language of the Grand Tour.
