Keeper of Time and Space by David Liang – Black Marble

The Keeper of Time and Space in black marble is an upright, almond-shaped sculpture by David Liang (b. 1976), worked by hand and 60 cm tall. The deep grey-black stone is polished to a high gloss, with cloudy grey veining and small pale flecks.

The piece tests the limits of abstract sculpture. An arched passage runs through the lower half, and two small round holes sit side by side above it, so light and shadow interlock inside the stone. Walking round it, the depth shifts: the openings close, widen and line up again with each angle. The dark marble makes the curved outline calm and forceful at once.

Liang carves every piece entirely by hand, bringing a thorough knowledge of art history to his craft. Signed by the sculptor, it counts as original work by a living artist and a collectable piece of contemporary art.

With a footprint of just 18 by 18 cm and no separate base, the sculpture stands directly on a desk or the top of a bookcase in a study, where lamplight falls through the arch and the two small holes.
