Convex Butler Mirror Cécile - Round Gold Mirror 80 cm

This round gold mirror draws the eye to its frame before its reflection. A broad, rounded outer moulding drops into a cove and ends in a row of small beads set tight against the glass. From the side the frame is deep and stepped, the gold bright on the raised curves and softer, almost matt, in the cove.

The Cécile is a new piece: the wooden frame is made by hand, then gilded by hand in gold leaf. Fine irregular lines run through the leaf on the outer moulding, and the colour warms and deepens towards the rim.

Inside the beaded edge sits convex glass, the defining feature of what the trade calls a butler’s mirror: its curved surface gathers the whole room into one reflection. The form follows the English convex mirrors of around 1800; the Metropolitan Museum of Art holds a girandole of 1800–1820 with a similar round gilded frame around convex glass. As the middle of the three Cécile sizes, the 80 cm frame spans about two-thirds of a 120 cm chest of drawers, enough to hold a bedroom wall without crowding it.

The styling is restrained, in the French classical manner: plain mouldings, a single bead row and no crest, so the gilding and the curved glass carry the design.
