Grotto Shell Mirror Grotta Marina - Gilded Venetian Mirror

The Grotta Marina is a shell mirror 180 cm high and 99 cm wide, its frame carved by hand in solid wood and crowded with sea life. Scallops, conchs and a coiled snail shell sit among branching coral, with a starfish at the top left, a seahorse on the right and two crabs at the upper right corner.

Each piece is carved separately and then painted: most of the frame in a pale champagne tone that reads almost silver, the seahorse and several shells in dark bronze, the crabs in amber gold. Scallops rise from the top rail like a crest, and the side rails run on into two feet; the photographs show the mirror both hung and standing.

The ornament draws on rococo rocaille, decoration built from shells, rocks, grottoes and flowing natural forms. Shell-lined grottoes are older still: in Florence, Bernardo Buontalenti turned a reservoir in the Boboli Gardens into a grotto between 1583 and 1587, with ceiling panels set with shells.

At 20 kg and close to two metres tall, it needs a wall with height to spare – an entrance hall or a high-ceilinged living room – where the scallop crest sits well above eye level and the carved sea life can be seen from close by.

Warranty

All our products carry a 24-month warranty against defects in materials and workmanship under normal use and care.
