Large Gold Wall Mirror Louise - Gilded Crested Mirror

The Louise is a gilded mirror of generous width, 180 cm high and 100 cm wide, whose top rises from rounded shoulders in two concave curves to a slight central peak. A plume of acanthus leaves crowns that peak, with pierced scrolls and foliage running down each side.

The straight sides and square lower corners carry no ornament. Instead the frame is built up in steps: a darker outer band, bright gilt fillets and a continuous row of beads beside the facet-cut glass.

The gold leaf is patinated by hand, left bright on the reliefs and browner in the recesses, which gives the crest its depth. The curved top follows the 'swept rail' of French rococo frames, which the Getty Museum describes with pearl, leaf and shell ornament; on the Louise that repertoire is pared down to a bead row and a leafy plume.

Hung on its own at the far end of an entrance hall, the 100 cm frame fills the view from the front door, and the reflection seems to lengthen the space. Above a console the same width gives the wall a firm centre.
