Gold Sunburst Mirror Soleil - Convex Gilded Mirror Ø90 cm

The Soleil is a gold sunburst mirror made entirely of straight rays: dozens of them, each fluted along its length and cut at an angle at the tip, set in staggered lengths so the outline breaks into the jagged edge of a starburst mirror. It measures Ø 90 cm.

The piece is a present-day version of the French miroir soleil, made by hand after a classic model. The sun as an emblem has a famous French precedent: according to the Château de Versailles, Louis XIV chose the sun as his personal emblem at the start of his reign, the symbol of Apollo, god of peace and the arts.

Solid wood carries the gold leaf over a fine gesso ground and red bole, with a light patina on top; thin reddish streaks show along the ray edges. At the centre, a plain gilded moulding, a twisted rope moulding and a black-lacquered ring enclose convex glass that curves the reflection of the room.

The straight rays read as clearly in a classic room as in a mid-century or modern one. Centred above a fireplace with about half a metre of clear wall on each side, the Soleil keeps its stepped silhouette crisp against the paint.

Warranty

All our products carry a 24-month warranty against defects in materials and workmanship under normal use and care.
