Convex Butler Mirror Cécile - Round Gold Mirror 100 cm

At 100 cm across, this large round mirror is the biggest of the Cécile sizes, and its convex glass draws an entire room into one gilded circle. In one photograph it takes in a whole bedroom, from headboard to window.

Painters used that effect long before it reached the wall of a modern house. In Jan van Eyck’s The Arnolfini Portrait of 1434, in the National Gallery, London, a large round mirror hangs at the centre of the composition, and its convex glass shows the compressed room together with two men entering through the door.

The frame is made entirely by hand and laid with gold leaf. A rounded outer moulding falls into a wide cove and rises again to a row of small raised beads beside the glass; at this diameter the profile reads clearly from the far side of a room, and the leaf shows fine streaks on the curves. Centred over a sideboard of about 180 cm on the main wall of a living room, the mirror holds that wall by itself, with nothing else hung beside it.

The design keeps to the French classical manner – plain mouldings, one bead row, no crest – so that size, gold and the curving reflection carry the piece. The Cécile also comes in smaller diameters.
