Large Gold Wall Mirror Gisèle - Gilded Arched Mirror

The Gisèle is a large gold wall mirror, 170 cm high and 90 cm wide, whose rounded upper corners and square lower corners frame a pierced crest centred on the flat top edge. The gilding is warm and rubbed back on the high points to a brown ground.

The crest opens into a ribbed scallop shell above a spreading acanthus rosette, held between two C-scrolls with scrolling foliage and a small pendant at its base. Foliate ornament climbs the outer edge at both lower corners, and a twisted band of leaves lines the glass.

Made entirely by hand, the frame is finished in gold leaf and holds facet-cut glass. Rococo takes its name from the French rocaille, rock or broken shell, and the shell of the Gisèle draws on that repertoire, although here it is set in a symmetrical crest.

Above a hall console of about 120 cm, the 90 cm frame leaves a margin of wall on each side while the crest lifts the composition well above eye level. The frame is 11 cm deep, so its mouldings and corner ornament read in relief from the side as well as head-on.
