Large Gold Wall Mirror Perle - Baroque Gilded Mirror

The Perle is a gilded baroque mirror in French taste, 178 cm high and 110 cm wide, crowned by an open laurel wreath resting on a small cluster of flowers. Two laurel branches spread from the wreath over the top of the frame, which rises in a gentle curve to the centre and falls away to rounded shoulders.

Below the crest the frame is kept plain: stepped gilded mouldings and a row of tiny beads next to the glass, whose bevelled edge shows clearly at the corners. The gold is rubbed along the edges, where a warmer ground comes through.

The gold leaf is laid by hand on every frame. The laurel is the Louis XVI note in the design: the Getty Museum points to laurel-leaf festoons on French frames from the reign of Louis XVI (1774–1792), and the Perle gathers the same leaf into a wreath.

With a width of 110 cm, the Perle wants a mantel shelf of roughly 130 cm or more to sit comfortably above a fireplace, as it does over a veined marble mantelpiece in one of the photographs. On a plain wall above a console, the wreath stands out clearly against the paint.
