Gold Wall Mirror Beauvoir - Tall Gilded Arched Mirror

The Beauvoir is a tall arched mirror, 220 cm high and only 64 cm wide, in a gilded frame that ends in a pierced crest. The arch springs from rounded shoulders, and the gold has a warm, slightly uneven tone.

At the heart of the crest sits a scallop shell, surrounded by acanthus leaves and C-scrolls, with a small lattice beneath it. A fine bead moulding follows the glass all the way round, a curling leaf ornament fills each lower corner, and the edge of the glass is bevelled.

Each new frame is worked by hand and finished in gold leaf, so faint seams and shifts of tone remain visible in the leaf. The shape was inspired by the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles, completed between 1678 and 1684, where 357 mirrors line the arches facing the windows – at the time a great extravagance.

On a narrow pier of wall between two tall windows, the 64 cm frame fits where a broader mirror would not, and the height carries the eye up towards a high ceiling. The long reflection makes the wall read taller still and spreads daylight into the room.
