Convex Butler Mirror Cécile - Round Gold Mirror 45 cm

Curved glass lets this small convex mirror, only 45 cm across, show far more of a room than a flat mirror of the same size: the space shrinks into the disc and its walls bend towards the gilded rim. In one photograph an arched window, a pale sofa and a low table all fit inside it.

That wide field makes the smallest Cécile useful where wall space is short – a narrow hall, a cloakroom, a reading corner – because it opens up the view without taking over the wall.

The round frame is gilded by hand in gold leaf. A bright, rounded torus steps down to a softer, warmer band and a row of small beads against the glass; close up, the leaf shows its joins and a reddish tone at the outer edge. Gilt frames of this kind were traditionally gilded over gesso. A pair hung level above a sideboard, about 30 cm apart, reads as one composition, and several can be grouped with other round mirrors on one wall.

Larger diameters exist for bigger walls; the 45 cm version keeps the family’s French classical restraint – round frame, one bead row, no crest – at a scale made for the smallest rooms.
