Victoria Empire Caryatid Candelabra – Pair, Red Marble

This pair of caryatid candelabra in the Empire style sets winged Victory figures in dark patinated bronze on blocks of red marble mounted in gilt bronze.

Each Victory wears a long pleated robe, her wings raised behind her shoulders, and holds out a gilt torch in either hand, each torch topped by a candle cup. On her head she balances the crown of the candelabrum: an urn-shaped stem from which scrolled arms branch out around a tall central cup, four arms in all, dressed with palmettes and lotus leaves.

The red marble block carries a gilt mount of a lyre between palmettes on its front face and a narrow gilt frieze along the top, and stands on a wide square gilt base. This ornament follows the idiom of the Paris bronziers working around 1800; one of them, François Rémond, supplied the gilt-bronze mounts for a rolltop desk of 1787–88 now at the J. Paul Getty Museum.

Figures, torches and crowns are made by hand for every new pair. Only 16 cm deep, the candelabra fit the narrow shelf of a mantel or a slim console, one at each end, and at 81 cm they hold the candle flames well above eye level. The red of the marble ties the dark figures to the gilding.

All our products carry a 24-month warranty against defects in materials and workmanship under normal use and care.
