Yellow Dragon Cache Pots - Qing Style Pair

These dragon cache pots come as a pair of straight-sided cylinders in Chinese porcelain, their saturated yellow ground crossed by a dragon drawn in greys and fine black line. Around it grow white chrysanthemums, five-petalled blossoms and round buds among grey palmate leaves.

The dragon has long curling whiskers, bared fangs and a scaled body ending in talons. A red three-character inscription sits near the rim, and a turquoise glaze lines the interior and shows at the mouth. Underneath, a broad unglazed foot ring surrounds a turquoise centre with four red characters. There is no drainage hole, so each pot takes a plant in its own inner pot.

Porcelain enamelled over a yellow ground is known as famille jaune; these pots take up that palette in the Qing style, while the dragon itself is kept to greys. In China the dragon was long a guardian emblem and a symbol of the emperor. The marks are a style feature and do not date the pots.

On a broad windowsill the pair holds two pots of ranunculus or tulips, the yellow and turquoise picking up the colour of the flowers. Both pots carry the same scheme, so either can stand on the left or the right.
