This pair of tea caddies in Chinese porcelain is painted by hand in soft pastel enamels, with a flowering branch in a yellow cartouche on each broad face. Around the cartouches, a green ground in slight relief is packed with small flowers.

The caddies are oblong in plan, with recessed vertical corners, a flat shoulder banded in yellow and a white moulded rim at shoulder and foot. Pink, lilac and pale-blue blossoms open on the branches, a small bird perches near the top and a garden rock rises at the base; on the narrow sides a fruiting branch carries another bird. The low cylindrical lids are green, sprigged with flowers and centred with a yellow medallion.

Because each panel is painted freehand, blossoms and birds fall in slightly different places from one caddy to the other. The pastel palette follows famille rose: pink enamel came into use in China about 1720, and European collectors named the group only later. The six-character Kangxi mark in underglaze blue on the base is a style feature and does not date the pieces.

Set on a dresser shelf in front of a row of plates, the pair adds green and yellow among blue and white. The lids lift off, and the lobed bases are glazed white within an unglazed foot rim.
