Peach Vase - Qing Dynasty Style, Hand-Painted

This peach vase is a bottle form, globular in the body with a tall, slender neck, painted by hand on a pale celadon-green ground. A gnarled brown branch rises from the lower body, wraps round the belly and climbs the neck, hung with peaches that shade from pinkish white to coral red.

Fine stippling models each fruit, and the leaves come in two greens, one turquoise, one yellower. The colours are overglaze enamels in the manner of famille rose: pink enamel entered the Chinese palette around 1720, and European collectors gave the family its name in the nineteenth century. On the base, a six-character seal mark in underglaze blue belongs to the style and does not date the vase.

In China the peach stands for long life. The Metropolitan Museum links it to the goddess Xiwangmu and her peaches of immortality, and on eighteenth-century enamelled porcelain nine peaches together expressed a wish for longevity.

On a bookcase shelf among cloth-bound books, the soft green and the red of the fruit carry across the room. The back shows looser sprigs of pink buds, so the vase can be turned for a quieter face.
