Phoenix and Peony Ginger Jar - Blue and White Porcelain

This ginger jar is painted by hand in cobalt blue with a phoenix among peonies: a long-tailed bird with a spotted breast perches on a pierced rock, surrounded by open flowers, leaves laid on in broad blue blots and tufts of grass.

A second spotted bird sits in the branches, and small birds fly across the shoulder. The reverse is left almost bare, with one large calligraphic stroke and wide washes of blue at the edges. The body is squat and broad-shouldered; the low, flat lid carries a flower sprig on top and short dashes round its side.

Every jar is painted freehand, so the brushwork differs from one to the next. Kaolin and petuntse make up the high-fired porcelain, and an aged finish browns the edge of the lid and the unglazed foot rim; the base carries no mark.

In Chinese art the phoenix is often associated with the empress, and the peony, the 'king of flowers', with wealth and prosperity. At 28 cm the jar sits comfortably on a shelf of an open bookcase; with the lid set aside, it takes a compact bunch of white hydrangeas.
