This Chinese lidded jar is painted by hand in deep cobalt blue on white porcelain: long-tailed phoenixes glide between clusters of dotted flowers, and a seated Foo dog crowns the domed lid.

The jar stands 45 cm high and is fullest across the shoulder, where a band of lobed cloud-collar motifs frames small heads modelled in relief. A key-fret border rings the neck, and tall blue panels with a net-like filling close the design above the foot. The body of kaolin and petuntse is high-fired, and a deliberately aged finish tints the lid flange and the foot rim a soft brown. Each jar is painted on its own, so the lids differ slightly from one to the next.

In Chinese imagery the phoenix, the fenghuang, is the noblest of all feathered creatures and was said to appear only in times of peace and prosperity. The Foo dog is a Buddhist lion, a guardian of the kind that stood at the entrance to temples in China.

With a weight of 9 kg the jar stands firmly at one end of a long sideboard, its height answering a table lamp at the other end. The price covers a single jar; the photographs show two side by side.
