Palmette Empire-Style Candelabra – Pair

These Empire candelabra set a draped female figure in dark patinated bronze against gilt bronze, in the French Empire style. Each candelabrum rises from a square gilt base through a domed foot and a tapering column to a gilt sphere, on which the figure stands on tiptoe.

With both arms raised, she holds a horizontal gilt branch with a candle cup at each end and a small finial at its centre, so each piece takes two candles. Stylised foliage runs along the branch, a calyx of leaves wraps the foot of the column, and the gilt bands of the shaft are worked in a fine lattice. The palmette, the stylised palm leaf used everywhere in neoclassical ornament, gives the pair its name.

Using a female figure as the support goes back to Greek antiquity, and Empire designers often gave such figures a bearing role in the decorative arts.

Both candelabra are newly made by hand. At 47 cm, the two stand well either side of a gilt-framed mirror above a sideboard, where the glass repeats the candlelight. The dark figures read clearly against the gilding from across the room, even before the candles are lit.

All our products carry a 24-month warranty against defects in materials and workmanship under normal use and care.
