Oval Gold Wall Mirror Fontaine - Gilded Crested Mirror

The Fontaine is an oval gold mirror in a plain gilded frame, with all of its ornament gathered into the crest. There a three-lobed acanthus leaf rises from a small rosette, flanked by pierced C-scrolls with foliage that run down the shoulders of the oval.

Below the crest the frame stays calm: rounded outer mouldings, a flat gilded band and a finely ornamented fillet next to the glass. The gold has a warm, slightly rubbed tone, and the glass is facet-cut.

Each frame receives its gold leaf by hand. A heavily stylised acanthus leaf was a signature motif of the rococo, which first appeared in France in the 1720s and 1730s; on the Fontaine the leaf sits in a symmetrical crest, closer to classical French taste than to rococo asymmetry.

At 87 cm wide, the oval sits comfortably over a mantelpiece of 120 cm or more, and the crest adds height to the chimney breast without adding width. Its curved outline also breaks the run of straight lines set by door frames and shelving.
