Mathilde Lantern – Louis XVI Hall Lantern, Bronze

Clear glass etched with small star-shaped flowers on trailing stems wraps this bronze lantern in the Louis XVI style, so that when lit the pattern shows as a fine white tracery.

Inside, four candle-shaped lights stand on curved arms. The frame is patinated by hand to a warm bronze with golden highlights. Scrolled arms with spindle-shaped members rise from the upper ring to the suspension ring; on the upper ring sit ribbon bows, their long tails falling over the glass, a motif closely tied to the Louis XVI period, with small crowned finials between them. Stylised leaves run down the uprights, and little drop finials hang beneath the base.

Large lanterns have long lit rooms for company. The Victoria and Albert Museum keeps a carved and gilded Venetian lantern of 1570–1600 that probably hung in the portego of a palace, the great first-floor room used for weddings and dances. Hung at the centre of a living room with a ceiling of about three metres, the 43 cm Mathilde reads clearly from the doorway.

The lantern is wired, its chain is included and the socket size is E14. At 88 cm high, it is a new lantern made by hand, and the etched flowers stay faintly visible when the lights are off.
