This pair of ginger jars is tall and ovoid, with rounded shoulders and a domed lid topped by a small pointed finial. A dense scroll of open, round-petalled flowers on spiralling tendrils covers the blue and white porcelain, and a large 囍, the double-happiness character, stands on the front of each jar.

The decoration is built up in two stages. The floral scroll is transferred onto the porcelain; the character and the finer accents are then brushed on by hand, so the line wavers slightly and no two jars are quite alike. A band of narrow lanceolate leaves runs round the foot, and an aged finish softens the white. Each jar is 36 cm high.

'Ginger jar' is the conventional name for this lidded form, and the Victoria and Albert Museum catalogues Kangxi-period examples under it. The doubled character for joy is linked in China to a harmonious marriage.

One at each end of a console table beneath a wall mirror, the jars give the arrangement a symmetrical frame. With the lids on they keep their closed, classical outline; with the lids off they become vases for peonies or blossom branches.
