Lumière Royale – Louis XVI Hall Lantern, Bronze

The Lumière Royale is a Louis XVI lantern in bronze: a tall cylinder of curved clear glass between reeded uprights, finished in a warm patina with golden highlights on the relief.

The ornament is typical of the style: flowers, bows and stylised leaves. A moulded frieze with rosettes runs round the upper ring, a knotted bow at each rosette, and between them small chain festoons with tassels hang just inside the glass. Curved straps rise from the ring to a central boss, with leaf-wrapped finials and sprays of foliage above. At the foot, a pierced gallery circles the lower edge, and small round pendants hang beneath it.

Lanterns also lit the king's own rooms: in 1784 the marchand-mercier Dominique Daguerre delivered one for Louis XVI's Cabinet intérieur at Compiègne, gilt by François Rémond, which now hangs at Versailles.

Wired ready for use, the lantern hangs from the chain that comes with it and has an E14 socket. Hung centrally over a long dining table, its 92 cm height gives the room a vertical accent while the 39 cm diameter stays well within the width of the table. Each lantern is newly made by hand, its patina applied by hand as well, so the golden highlights fall slightly differently on every lantern.

All our products carry a 24-month warranty against defects in materials and workmanship under normal use and care.
