Longevity Baluster Vases - Blue and White Pair

This pair of baluster vases, named 'Longevity' in the collection, is covered in a dense floral scroll of cobalt blue on white porcelain. Large stylised flower heads sit among leafy tendrils, and on the neck and the front of each vase the doubled character 囍, shuangxi, stands out in a darker blue.

A key-fret band edges the flared, dish-like mouth. Two small modelled beasts with curling tails climb down each side of the neck, and the vases rest on a gently flaring foot circled by a band of small ovals. The flowers are applied by transfer; the character is then painted over them by hand, which is why the two vases differ slightly. Both are formed by hand from kaolin and petuntse, high-fired, and stand 36 cm high.

Despite the model name, the character is not the sign for long life: 囍, joy written twice, alludes to harmony in marriage. The blue itself belongs to the tradition of Jingdezhen, where potters refined their porcelain with kaolin and took cobalt from Yunnan or imported it from the Middle East.

Placed at either end of a mantelpiece, the pair frames a mirror or painting hung between them. The flared mouths are wide enough for a few peony stems or blossom branches.
