Large Tulip Pyramid George - Blue and White Porcelain

George is a large tulip pyramid, 84 cm high, built from six loose parts: a square pedestal on four scrolled feet and five tiers stacked above it, narrowing to an open, tapering neck. Short cylindrical spouts sit at the corners and at the middle of each face, every one flanked by a moulded fluted fan.

Scattered flowers, scrolls and border bands are painted by hand in cobalt on a white glaze with a slightly aged, ivory tone. On the pedestal, lobed cartouches frame scrolling peonies. The porcelain is kaolin and petuntse, high-fired to a hard body that rings clearly when tapped.

Tiered flower vases of this kind were made in Delft around 1690 in tin-glazed earthenware, and the inventories of Mary II's palaces at Het Loo and Hampton Court list many of her Delft vases. George takes up that architectural outline in porcelain, with a Chinese-style floral decoration.

Its height suits the floor or a low chest rather than a table. At the turn of a staircase or beside a fireplace, the spouts take blossom branches as readily as single tulips.
