This large fishbowl planter carries foo dogs painted by hand in cobalt – guardian lions with curling manes and fan-shaped tails – playing among clouds and balls trailing ribbons. The drum-shaped body swells slightly between a wide, flat rim and a band of breaking waves at the foot.

Lion masks holding rings are modelled in relief on the body as mock handles. Under the rim runs a band of pendant blue triangles broken by small moulded lugs, and the flat rim itself is painted with a cloud band. The masks are formed by hand, and the brushwork varies from one lion to the next.

Kaolin and petuntse go into the porcelain, which is high-fired to a hard, glassy body with a clear ring; an aged finish softens the white. The base is unglazed, brown and ringed with concentric marks, with no drainage hole. The fish bowl is a Chinese porcelain form – the V&A holds one made at Jingdezhen under the Kangxi emperor – and guardian lions stood at the entrances of Chinese temples.

Standing on the floor beside a French window, the bowl takes a fiddle-leaf fig or a large fern in an inner pot. It measures 42 cm high and 40 cm across and is sold singly.
