This Chinese porcelain pagoda stands 118 cm high, painted by hand in cobalt blue on a glossy white glaze. Seven roofed storeys rise from a stepped base to a striped finial, nine sections in all, each storey a little narrower than the last.

Every storey has arched window openings, a balcony with a Greek-key fret railing and upturned eaves hatched like roof tiles. Peony-like flowers and scrolls fill the walls. On the base, flower medallions alternate with lattice panels, and a short flight of steps climbs the terrace to an arched door.

Each pagoda is painted by hand and then high-fired, so the brushwork shifts from panel to panel, and a slightly aged finish takes the edge off the white. The form follows the porcelain pagodas that China made for Western collectors in the eighteenth century, such as one of about 1765–1775 in the Rijksmuseum, painted in underglaze blue. Of the real towers, the porcelain tower of Nanjing, nine storeys high, was among the best known until it was demolished in 1856.

With a width of only 30 cm, it stands directly on the floor, in the corner of a living room, where the diminishing storeys carry the eye upwards. It is sold singly; two make a pair for either side of an opening.
