Jasmine Brush Pots - Blue and White Pair

These two brush pots take the straight-sided, neckless form of the Chinese bitong, and at 20 cm high and 20 cm across they are as broad as they are tall. A dense indigo scroll covers the white porcelain: large stylised flowers with fan-ribbed centres on spiralling, fern-like tendrils, held between double blue lines at rim and foot.

The decoration is applied by transfer, so the pattern repeats evenly round each pot. The shaping is done by hand, with slight irregularities left in, and an aged finish gives the glaze a creamy tone that varies between the two; in the photographs one pot is noticeably warmer than its partner. The porcelain is a high-fired body of kaolin and petuntse.

On a Chinese scholar's writing table, a pot like this kept the brushes upright alongside the 'four treasures' of brush, ink stick, inkstone and paper. Floral scrolls in underglaze blue already appear on bowls of the early Ming dynasty.

Low and wide, the pair sits comfortably on a desk, one pot holding pens and pencils, or at the two ends of a bookcase shelf; with an inner pot, each takes a small orchid or a bunch of tulips. Neither pot carries a mark on its cream-toned base.
