Hundred Antiques Lidded Jar - Blue and White Porcelain

The hundred antiques, or bogu, make up the decoration of this lidded jar, painted freehand in cobalt blue: vases of flowering branches on stands, low tables, lidded tripod incense burners and ribbon-tied boxes and emblems spread over the white ground.

The Metropolitan Museum describes the hundred antiques as a pattern that became popular in China in the 17th century, gathering antiques, ornamental vessels and the accessories of a scholar's desk. The two sides of this jar show different arrangements, so it can be turned to change the scene.

Small animal masks on the shoulder are left as matt, unglazed biscuit, a key-fret band circles the neck and the domed lid carries a Foo dog in blue glaze. Fired at high temperature, the blend of kaolin and petuntse becomes heavy, vitrified porcelain that rings when tapped, and every new jar is decorated by hand.

Sold singly, although most photographs show two. Its scholar's objects suit a study, where it can stand on a writing table beside a desk lamp and a few old books.
