Hexagonal Double Happiness Ginger Jar - Blue and White

This hexagonal ginger jar takes its six-sided outline from the Chinese tea caddy, reworked at 42 cm high in blue and white porcelain. A fine scroll of stylised lotus flowers and leafy tendrils runs across all six facets in cobalt on white, and on three alternate facets the character 囍, shuangxi, is painted large and bold.

The lotus scroll goes on by transfer, and the character is added over it by hand, recognisable by its broader, livelier brushstroke; it appears again on the flat top of the hexagonal lid. A key-fret border runs round the side of the lid, and double blue lines finish the foot. Kaolin and petuntse, fired at high temperature, give a hard, vitrified body, and the unglazed base carries no mark.

Buddhism brought the lotus into Chinese imagery as a sign of purity; the doubled character for joy refers to a happy marriage.

On a low coffee table the jar stays below eye level from the sofa, and with the lid set aside its open mouth takes a loose bunch of tulips. Sold singly, it reads from any side: turning it brings either a character or an unbroken lotus scroll to the front.
