Hand-Made Ceramic Pineapple - Glazed Ornament

This ceramic pineapple is a glazed ornament 26 cm high, an orange-yellow fruit under a crown of deep-green leaves that curl outwards. Every scale stands out in relief, orange at the tip and yellow-green at the edges, beneath a glossy glaze.

It is shaped and glazed by hand, so each pineapple differs slightly from the next, and only one is available. Underneath, a ring of unglazed brown clay forms the foot around a small vent hole.

Pineapples were rare, highly valued exotics in seventeenth-century Europe; a painting in the Royal Collection shows Charles II being presented with one. As a costly import, the fruit came to signify gracious hospitality at the table, and English potters of about 1760 took the motif into glazed earthenware, as a teapot in the RISD Museum shows.

At 14 cm across, it sits comfortably on a glass-topped console beside a gilt palm-tree lamp, as in one of the photographs, a Hollywood Regency pairing of green and gold; a bar cart or a display cabinet suits it just as well. Seen from any side, the separate leaves of the crown give this contemporary piece a lively, irregular outline.
