Double Happiness Lidded Jar - Blue and White Porcelain

This lidded jar has the baluster outline of a temple jar – full at the high shoulder, drawn in at the waist and flaring slightly at the foot – in blue and white porcelain marked with the character 囍 for double happiness.

A dense cobalt scroll of fine tendrils and stylised open flowers covers the body. The 囍 stands large at the front, returns on the side and appears again on the domed lid. A key-fret border runs round the shoulder and the lid flange, a narrow flower band circles the neck and two blue lines finish the foot; even the knob carries a small painted flower.

The flowers are applied by transfer, after which the character is painted over them by hand, recognisable by its slightly broader brushstroke. The porcelain is high-fired until hard and vitrified; an aged finish stains the unglazed lid flange and foot ring brown, and the recessed base is unmarked. The jar comes in two sizes, Medium and Large, each sold singly.

Two joined characters for joy make up the sign, which alludes to marital harmony. With its narrow waist and small footprint, the jar fits on a shallow mantelpiece or the deep sill of a sash window.

Warranty

All our products carry a 24-month warranty against defects in materials and workmanship under normal use and care.
