Double Happiness Ginger Jar - Blue and White Porcelain

This ginger jar has the full, egg-shaped body of the classic form, made in blue and white porcelain in the style of Qing blue and white, with the character 囍 standing large at the front between two broad stylised blossoms. Dense cobalt tendrils fill the ground around them.

Turn the jar and a blossom comes to the front with a 囍 on either side, since character and flowers alternate around the body. A band of cloud scrolls runs round the shoulder, a deep blue zone with a fine grid closes the lower body, and the low lid repeats the tendrils with one more 囍 on top.

The flowers are transfer-printed; the character is then painted over them by hand. The porcelain is made of kaolin and petuntse and fired at high temperature until hard and vitrified, which gives it a clear ring, and an aged finish leaves the mouth rim and the foot a soft brown. The base is unmarked.

The sign is formed from two characters for joy set side by side, and it alludes to marital harmony. At 23 cm high and sold singly, the jar fits on a shelf of a glass-fronted display cabinet with the 囍 turned towards the room.
