Dancing Faun with Cymbals - Bronze after the Antique

This bronze dancing faun with cymbals is modelled after the antique: the Satiro danzante in the Uffizi in Florence. The young, nude faun is caught mid-dance with his head bowed and a faint smile, one arm raised to head height with a cymbal, the other lowered with the second, while one foot presses a small clapper on the ground.

The curls are tightly modelled and chest, abdomen and back are clearly defined. A fig leaf – a feature of the small bronze versions rather than the marble – and a three-stepped bronze plinth complete the figure. Each figure is made by lost-wax casting, the cire perdue technique, and receives a brown patina applied by hand; a green patina is also available.

The Uffizi marble is itself a Roman copy of the first century AD after a Hellenistic original of the mid-second century BC, its head and arms restored in the sixteenth century. Around 1705 the Florentine Massimiliano Soldani Benzi cast small bronze reductions of it, and figures of this size suited the cabinets of Grand Tour travellers.

Only 29 cm high, the faun can stand at eye level in a glazed wall cabinet, where the raised cymbal and the turn of the muscled back are both in view.
