Bronze Hunting Panther after Bugatti

This bronze panther after Bugatti walks with its head carried low, below the line of the back: one foreleg reaches forward with the pad flat on the plinth, the hind leg trails behind, and the lean body closes at the croup without a tail.

Nothing has been smoothed away: the modelling is kneaded and pinched into broad planes and ridges, and the dark brown patina turns golden where the ridges catch the light and reddish-copper over the haunches. The thin rectangular plinth is bronze too, its top worked by hand and left uneven.

Its source is Rembrandt Bugatti (1884–1916), the Milan-born sculptor of animals; from 1907 he lived in Antwerp and drew the animals of its zoo. The Musée d'Orsay keeps his plaster panthers of around 1904 and calls his style terse and lively, and this bronze follows that manner without copying any one model. Cast hollow by the lost-wax process (cire perdue), each new piece starts from its own wax.

Forty-six centimetres long, 22 cm wide and 20 cm high, the panther can sit on a low table beside a reading chair, where the modelling is seen from close by and a little above. From that height the planes of the back catch the light one by one.
