This bronze bear sculpture shows three bears at play in a stylised tree, set on a block of white marble. The green patina warms to gold-brown on the snouts, ears and paws, where the bronze comes through.

One bear stands on the high branch with its head turned; the second comes down head-first, all four paws gripping the trunk; the third sits on the branch to the right with its back rounded. The gnarled trunk grows from a rocky bronze base, so tree, rock and animals rise as one bronze group above the white stone.

Bears climbing or gathered in groups recur in the animalier tradition, which in the nineteenth century made animals a sculptural theme of their own; the Victoria and Albert Museum holds a small bronze standing bear by Antoine-Louis Barye. The group is cast in lost wax (cire perdue), each new piece from its own wax model, so no two are quite alike.

At 30 cm high on a footprint of 23 by 13 cm, it fits a single compartment of a cube shelving unit, where the tree fills the height and each bear can be followed branch by branch. From the side, the middle bear hangs head-down along the trunk, the liveliest pose in the group.
