Bronze Sphinx Candlesticks - Pair

A pair of bronze candlesticks modelled as winged sphinxes in brown-patinated bronze, in the Egyptian Revival taste that ran through Empire-period design. Each holds a fluted candle cup above the head, carried on a seated, winged female form.

The Greek sphinx of myth, winged and female, is the creature of the Oedipus story. Both pieces are made by hand using the traditional lost-wax method in brown-patinated bronze, set on plinths of black-veined marble.

A handsome pair for a mantel, console or dining table, suited to a classical or Empire-style interior.
