The Eternal Thinker - Bronze Skeleton

The Eternal Thinker is a bronze Thinker skeleton: a complete human skeleton that takes up the pose of Auguste Rodin’s The Thinker, bent sharply forward on the edge of a squared block, its jaw resting on the back of one hand.

One elbow rests on the knee with the forearm upright; the other arm falls across the body, its open hand hanging beyond the knee. Ribcage, vertebrae, sacrum and pelvis can all be read, and the vault of the skull is polished smooth above the eye sockets and teeth.

The figure is a new lost-wax bronze (cire perdue), cast and given its brown patina by hand. One rough face of the block carries the incised foundry mark ‘Milo’, and the whole stands on a black marble plinth.

Rodin (1840–1917) conceived his seated figure from 1880, at about 70 cm, for the tympanum of The Gates of Hell, where it first stood for Dante as The Poet. Here a skeleton takes the poet’s place and turns the pose into a memento mori. Only 25 cm high, it fits between the books on a single bookcase shelf, where the forward stoop reads best from the side.

Warranty

All our products carry a 24-month warranty against defects in materials and workmanship under normal use and care.
