This seated panther sculpture rests upright on its haunches, forelegs straight and toes spread on the plinth, the head carried forward and a little raised. Behind it the long tail is laid flat along the bronze and lifts into a hook at the tip.

The expression is watchful rather than fierce: blunt muzzle, small pricked ears, mouth closed. Short faceted planes build up the head and chest, and the tool marks are left in place, so that in raking light the shoulder blades and spine stand out. The patina is dark brown, close to black, applied by hand, with warm reddish lights on the ridges.

Each new piece is cast by hand in cire perdue, the lost-wax technique, from a wax model of its own, so no two are quite alike. The handling looks to Rembrandt Bugatti (1884–1916), who studied animals from life at the Antwerp zoo. His panthers in the Musée d'Orsay, plaster models from around 1904, all walk; this one takes that terse, lively manner of observation into a pose of rest.

The narrow plinth runs well beyond the animal to carry the tail, so the sculpture needs a surface with some length: a hall console, placed side-on, shows the whole outline from ears to tail tip.
