The sleeping lion and the waking lion, set as guardians of temples, thrones and tombs, are among the best-known motifs in European sculpture. Antonio Canova (1757-1822) gave the pair their definitive form for the tomb of Pope Clement XIII in St Peter's Basilica in Rome: one lion with head raised and alert, the other settled down with its eyes closed.

This bronze pair is modelled after that example. Cast via cire perdue, the lost-wax method, and finished with a warm brown patina, the lions each rest on a plinth of red-veined marble, a choice of material that reinforces the neoclassical character of the work.

At 32 cm long per figure, they suit a mantelpiece or a library shelf, displayed as a pair.
