Bronze Recumbent Lions after Canova - Pair

These bronze lions form a recumbent pair after the lions of Antonio Canova (1757–1822): one lies alert with its head raised and eyes open, the other rests its muzzle on its crossed forepaws, eyes closed. Both are full-maned males in a warm brown patina, lighter on the curls of the mane, the muzzle and the paws.

Canova placed his pair at the foot of the tomb of Pope Clement XIII in St Peter’s, Rome, made between 1783 and 1792: one lion awake, the other asleep. The originals are marble; the model was later repeated in marble, terracotta and bronze at every scale, and this pair follows it as a new work in bronze.

Each new lion is lost-wax cast (cire perdue) together with a flat bronze plate, which rests on a bevelled slab of red marble with cream veining. The mane is worked lock by lock, and the claws and toe pads of the extended forepaws are clearly modelled.

At 32 cm long each, the two lions can face each other from opposite ends of a mantelshelf, the waking one on the side from which the room is entered.
